For my 4th guest speaker I decided to watch a youtube video of a guy talking about fire making in a survival scenario. The man in the video is Dr. Bill Schindler, he's a professor of archaeology and anthropology at washington university. In this video he goes over different methods and what materials you should use to start fires while in the wilderness, while using materials he can find at the locations he's at. The first steps in making a fire is to get a sharp edge. Whether that is a knife or a rock you have sharpened you need one. Once you have that you can cut and shape the wood you've collected to start the fire. Once you have that done the most common way to start a fire is the hand drill method. The hand drill method requires 2 parts: the hearth board and the spindle. The hearth board needs to be made a more softwood and needs to be non-resinous. The spindle needs to be long and straight and needs to be a soft wood also. The next step is to make a divot in the hearth board for the spindle to sit in. you then need to place the spindle into the divot and place the spindle in between your palms and moves you're hands back and forth while starting at the top of the spindle you then move your hand down it while spinning it, then you repeat the process until you have and ember. Once you have the ember you need to very carefully place it into your tinder bundle. The tinder is made up of an easily flammable material such as tree bark shavings, you need to gather a good amount of it and form it into a bird nest of sorts. The ember is then placed into the tinder bundle and you want to slowly and carefully blow onto it to ignite the ember and create a flame. Once you have a flame you want to then place it down onto a dry area and begin placing a lot of thin sticks to catch fire, you want to slowly increase the size of the stick the bigger and hooter you have the fire and once you're done that you have fire. Starting a fire this way isn’t the easiest but it is a very old technique that people have been mastering for ages. It was really cool to see all of the work that went into making the fire and how much more complex it is then it sounds. This subject relate o my topic of being lost in the woods because if you get stranded in the woods and have no way to keep warm or cook any meat you can harvest then you will be screwed and won’t be able to survive.

Officer Gebhart11/23/2020 In class we had a guest speaker come in and talk to us. The guest speaker was officer Gebhart. Officer Gebhart came in and talked to us about active shooters, phones and the things you can do to get in trouble on them, and then he had us do an active shooter activity. He started off talking about active shooters, first he talked about what an active shooter was. He then moved onto talking about all of the things you need to do in an active shooter situation. When there is an active shooter the first thing you need to do is flee, get away from the danger presented. The second thing you need to do is fortify, do whatever you can to protect yourself from the active danger. The last thing you need to do is fight, protect yourself and do whatever it is you need to do to survive. After that we then talked about phones and how everything we do on our phones and be backtracked. Just because you are on snapchat or anything like that doesn’t mean that they can't find what is on your phone. He talked about the offenses for them finding inappropriate pictures and stuff like that on your phone and the consequences that come along with those. Then finally we did an active shooter drill, We had to fortify the room by covering all the windows and barricading the door with the desk. We also had to arm ourselves by finding something in the room that could be used to defend yourself from a threat.
The stuff we learned wouldn’t help me much in my survival scenario, but there are key points that could help me survive. Being lost in the woods not much of this information attains to you, when you're lost in the woods you're most likely to be alone and you wouldn’t need to worry about someone shooting you. If you are lost in the woods fortifying is a good thing to remember. When stuck in the woods you don’t know what dangers are present, having your own shelter would be a good idea and you would want to fortify it to protect yourself. Arming yourself would also be a good idea, having a weapon of somesort is always a good idea and when you're unaware of what could be in the woods. In real life you should know these basic things to keep yourself safe. Unfortunately we live in a time where shootings happen more often than ever. You aren’t very likely to ever be in a shooting but most people believe that until it happens to them. Knowing these basic survival tips could save your life and others. Having the knowledge of what could happen if you do dumb things on you're phone, that should be a big eye opener that its more serious than people think. This knowledge could protect you from criminal offenses and from people trying to harm you.

Miss. Photides Survival of the fittest 09-04-2020 Mr. Renoll Talked about Charles Darwin and evolution. Mr. Renoll talked about Charles Darwin and his theory of evolution. Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution states that all living organisms arise and develop through natural selection, natural selection is the process of organisms who are better adapted to their environment and tend to reproduce and survive longer. In natural selection The environment decides which traits are beneficial for survival and when parents reproduce the ones that have the beneficial traits pass it down to their offspring. My website topic is surviving being stranded in the woods. Evolution has helped humans survive in the woods for a very long time. Over the course of time evolution has helped humans survive. Humans have evolved to be able to adapt to wherever they are living with what they call acclimation. Humans can adapt to their surroundings and we have evolved to become the most intelligent species on the planet. Being the most intelligent being on the planet we can do many things to help us survive in many conditions. Humans can do all the things necessary for survival when stuck in the woods, such as gather food and water, build shelters, build fire for heat and to cook food. And those are the things that humans need to survive. In survival of the fittest I would like to learn survival strategies for being lost in the woods. With the information I learned from Mr. Renoll I can study how plants and animals have adapted in the same type of environment. This will help me to better understand what it's like to survive if you are stuck in the wilderness.

Survival of the fittest is the term that means to be the most fit in every way that you would be the last person to survive a scenario. For example if a bunch of people were all lost in the woods, whoever was able to survive the longest would be the fittest person to be lost in the woods. When it comes to surviving there are many aspects that could take you out, for example there is sickness, dehydration, hunger, you can lose your mind and go crazy in the woods, you could break down and give up. There are many factors that you have to overcome to stay alive and sane. so you have to be the fittest mentally and physically. Mentally you need to be able to keep your morals and stay sane because if you give up mentally you won't be able to survive. You also need to be smart, because you need to be educated on what you need to do to be able to make it out of the woods alive.. Physically you need to be able to do all the tasks that are required for you to stay alive, For example you need to hunt, get safe drinking water, build shelter, and you need to be able to find your way back to civilization. If you are able to do all of that and more then you will be the fittest person to survive that type of scenario, And that's what survival of the fittest means to me.
